And in today's post, we will visit Złotoryja - the oldest documented city in Poland.... but to a very small extent.

Why to a small extent? Well, I managed to recover old recordings and photos from visiting the Kowalska (Blacksmith) Tower in Złotoryja and there are many other interesting places to visit in this city and its surroundings.

On the top of the blacksmith tower in Zlotoryja.

There are several interesting places to see in Złotoryja. The "Aurelia" gold mine, the Gold Museum, centuries-old city walls and the former basalt mine on Wilcza Góra. It is also worth seeing Jerzmanice-Zdrój, the former health resort and Krucze Skały and the hanging railway tracks. It is also worth knowing that Złotoryja, as the then Złota Góra, received city rights in 1211 and is the oldest documented location on Polish lands under Magdeburg law.
I will focus on the Kowalska Tower, which is an example of a medieval defensive structure. It was built in the mid-14th century. Its task was to protect the Upper Gate leading to the city. The building is 22.5 m high, 9.5 m in diameter and has walls 2.7 m thick at ground level. The entrance to the tower is at a height of 6.6 m.

Under the tower and on the tower

The Kowalska Tower (Baszta  - polish language) is located, of course, on Basztowa Street. The cool thing is that you get the keys to it yourself at a nearby tourist point. A ticket costs about 2 USD. Armed with the key to the Tower, I went to explore the building on my own.
As it turned out later, a few people followed me, which scared me a little, as you can see on the video ;-)

Almost  "caught"  in the middle of the tower
Well, I went in. I waited until people were "satiated" with the views from the tower and when they left I closed the hatch and started preparing for the "session" and it was quite cold then because it was late autumn.
And I started recording.. and guess what happened? Well, what happened is what's on the video below ;-) Heh

BOOM SHAKALAKA!! And almost "caught" again ;-)

And as usual I was a little embarrassed and a little happy, stressed but on the other hand I wanted to laugh. Once that guy had gone too. I closed the entrance hatch, started to go down, but I made another short video that shows how to finally enter the tower on the last section.

Small and quick workout for thigh and buttock muscles ;-)

I left the tower, gave back the key and went on to explore Złotoryja, but the videos were lost. Only the ones from the Tower remained. However, Złotoryja undoubtedly deserves a visit and a thorough exploration. It is worth knowing that every summer in Złotoryja there is a gold panning competition. Many people from all over the world come.

You enter the tower via such narrow, circular stairs ;-)

And that's all for today. If anyone can, I really encourage you to visit this picturesque town full of history ;-)

  1. I get this warm calming feeling reading your blog, almost like I read it as you narrate it. I also like how you tell the history behind the tower. It sure looked very nippy!
