And today, a beautiful palm house near the Książ Castle in Wałbrzych-Szczawienko.

I've been planning to go to this palm house for a long time, but something always got in the way. Finally I managed to go a few days ago. Of course, it was off-season, there were no people - only one school trip, which flew through the palm house in a sprinter's tempo and peace and quiet prevailed :-)

Absolutely great place. You can feel this exotic atmosphere

The Palm House in Wałbrzych was created on the initiative of the last representative of the Hochberg family at Książ Castle – Jan Henryk XV. The prince built it with his wife Maria Teresa Cornwallis-West, known as Daisy, in mind. The construction of the Palm House dates back to the years 1908-1911. It was a terribly expensive investment. In addition to the main building of the Palm House, a greenhouse, gardens in Japanese style, a rosarium, a fruit and vegetable garden and an area for growing shrubs were also built. The central part of the facility was a 15-meter building, made of metal and glass, in which date palms were planted. The whole was surrounded by single-storey orangeries. A small viewing gallery was created on the roof of the Palm House, from which one could admire the charming panorama of the area.

It's really nice to walk there ;-)

However, the most unusual building material was the one used to line the interior of the Palm House. The Prince brought seven railway wagons from Sicily, filled with solidified lava from the Etna volcano. The builders broke large pieces of volcanic tuff into smaller ones and created caves, waterfalls and walls with pockets for plants.

One of several "underground" passages and lava from the Etna volcano in Italy (Sicily)

Currently, the palm house is home to over 250 species of plants representing flora from various climate zones and continents. It is worth seeing, among others, bamboos, ficuses and shrubs from Asia; eucalyptus, spruces and pines from Australia; perennials from Africa; cacti and agaves from Central America and citrus plants from the Mediterranean basin. For lovers of the Far East, the only permanent Bonsai Exhibition in Poland should also be a real treat.

Tickets cost around 7 euros, but you can also buy a more expensive ticket connected with visiting other attractions, e.g. the Książ Castle. Below is a link to get to the Palm House from Wrocław.  Route from Wrocław to Palm House

I came by train and discovered another gem, which is the small and charming Wałbrzyuch Szczawienko train station ;-)

                                                      Very charming railway station

I definitely recommend visiting the Palm House, but remember - off-season and not on weekends. Unless you like crowds.
