And today a short story about the Srebrna Góra Fortress. One of the largest of its kind in the world, located in the Sowie Mountains. It is worth coming here.
The Srebrna Góra Fortress was built by Prussia in the years 1765-1777 and was one of the most modern fortifications of this type in Europe. The greatest admiration was and still is aroused by the mighty Donjon, one of the most interesting fortifications of the modern era. However, the Srebrna Góra Fortress is not in fact one object, but a whole complex of forts rising above the town.
The main core of the fortress is a complex of bastions with a Donjon in the middle. This structure had 151 fortress rooms (casemates) arranged on three floors. Huge warehouses, wells, an armory, a chapel, a prison, a hospital, a bakery, a brewery, craft workshops and a powder magazine made the fort completely independent and self-sufficient. It could accommodate 3,756 soldiers, huge supplies of ammunition, fuel and food.
Within the fortress, 9 wells were carved in solid rock with a total depth of 478.5 m, including the deepest (84 m) in the Ostróg Fort.
How to get there, when you can visit, prices and all information are available on the website https://forty.pl/ link forty
Of course, I recommend visiting Srebrna Góra off-season. I was there in February. It was easy to park the car, and the group of visitors who were led by a guide numbered maybe 10-12 people.
The fortress can also be visited on your own, but it must be admitted that the guides in Srebrna Góra are perfectly prepared and familiar with the history of Srebrna Góra, so I chose the option with a guide. The price is the same, about 12-13 euros - 50 PLN.\
The Srebrna Góra Fortress is located at the end of the Sowie Mountains. For me, these mountains are a bit like the Polish Appalachians. Mountains that hide a lot of secrets, for example the Riese project implemented by the Third Reich. Mountains not trampled by tourists, mountains not too high but beautiful, where you can find peace.
Recently, there is a restaurant and a hostel in the fortress. Both refer to the fortress's history with their decor. I ate in the restaurant - it was very ok. I didn't sleep in the hostel, but it's definitely an interesting option and the photos look very inviting.

Casemates of the Srebrna Góra Fortress and me ;-)
Yet another walk into the unknown, at least for me! What a massive structure to marvel. I'm curious to how it felt when in the fortresses. Being an older spot in the mountains, was there any fear of structure instability (I gather that as a tourist attraction, all of that is sorted out before opening to public).
