And today "Osówka" - an underground city - a mysterious project of the Third Reich implemented in the Sowie Mountains.

There are legends and many stories and hypotheses about these mysterious underground facilities in the Owl Mountains and under the Ksiaz Castle. I have wanted to visit at least one of these facilities for a long time - I think it was the largest one, Osówka (there are three others). I was there in February.

In this yellow helmet and beetroot jacket, that's me ;-) in the underground of Osówka.

The road to Osówka is so-so. It is definitely best to get there by car than by any other means of transport. We write Osówka - an underground city - in the GPS. It is located a dozen or so kilometers beyond Wałbrzych in the direction of Kłodzko.

And this is the underground city - one of many planned halls.

A war facility, built under the codename Riese in the Owl Mountains by the Third German Reich in the years 1943-45. In a short time, almost 2 km of underground corridors, halls and walkways were built. You can see guardhouses, a technical corridor and a huge hall 10 m high and many structures on the ground. According to one hypothesis, after completion, the Germans planned to station scientists working on the wunderwafe and the prototype of the atomic bomb here.

The time of visiting Osówka is about 60 minutes. The route is interesting, audiovisual. It is cold in the underground city, you should also have solid footwear - preferably waterproof. The tourist route is about 1200 meters long, the guide tells a very interesting story, you should also wear a protective helmet. I must admit that I am very interested in the history of the Riese project and all these hypotheses. I heartily recommend it to everyone for sightseeing and to delve into the subject.

We exit into the underground city in the mountainside.

The jacket is the same as in Osówka and instead of the yellow protective helmet - it's a bicycle helmet - also protective. And two huge bumpers - also protective. Heh :-)

  1. Apparently the facility was built as a part of Project Riese, and this was one of 7 built. The reasons for the project were unknown because it was either never documented or the Nazis burned it when the Soviets were closing in on Berlin.
